Transits & Timing

Your birth chart is a snapshot, but the sky keeps moving. Transits show how current planetary positions activate your natal chart and correlate with life events.

What Are Transits?

Transits are the current positions of planets as they move through the zodiac and form aspects to your natal chart. When a transiting planet contacts a natal planet or point, it "activates" that part of your chart.

Transit vs. Natal

Natal: Where planets were when you were born (fixed)
Transit: Where planets are right now (moving)

Example: If transiting Saturn is at 15Β° Pisces and your natal Moon is at 15Β° Pisces, Saturn is "transiting conjunct your Moon" β€” a significant emotional transit.

See Planets Move

Watch how planets move at different speeds. Fast planets like Moon and Mercury race through the zodiac while Saturn barely moves.

πŸŒ€Transit Motion

Watch how planets move through the zodiac over time. Fast planets (Moon, Mercury) race ahead while slow planets (Jupiter, Saturn) barely move.

Transit Speed & Significance

Slower planets create longer-lasting, more profound transits. Fast planets create brief but frequent activations.

The Saturn Return

The most famous transit: when Saturn returns to where it was when you were born. This happens roughly every 29 years.

1st Saturn Return

Ages 27-30

Transition to adulthood. Career crystallizes. Relationships tested. You become who you'll be.

2nd Saturn Return

Ages 57-60

Transition to elderhood. Legacy questions. What have you built? What matters now?

3rd Saturn Return

Ages 86-89

Integration of life wisdom. Few experience this consciously, but it marks a profound completion.

The Saturn return house matters: If Saturn returns in your 7th house, relationships are the arena. In the 10th house, it's career. The natal house Saturn occupies shows where you face your greatest tests.

The Jupiter Return

Jupiter returns to its natal position every ~12 years. These mark periods of expansion, opportunity, and growth in the house Jupiter occupies.

Jupiter Return Ages

~12, ~24, ~36, ~48, ~60, ~72, ~84...

Notice these align with major life transitions: end of childhood (12), early adulthood (24), mid-life (36-48), retirement age (60), and wisdom years (72+).

Jupiter returns feel expansive β€” opportunities arise, but you must act on them. Unlike Saturn (which forces change), Jupiter offers; you must reach.

Annual Profections

An ancient Hellenistic timing technique: each year of life activates a different house. The ruler of that house becomes your "Lord of the Year."

πŸ”„Annual Profections

Each year of life activates a house in sequence. Your profected house shows the area of life emphasized this year, and its ruler becomes your "Lord of the Year."

Outer Planet Transits

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto move so slowly that their transits mark generational and life-altering periods. When they contact personal planets or angles, expect profound shifts.

β™… Uranus Transits

Sudden awakening, disruption of the status quo, liberation. Uranus opposite natal Uranus (~42) is the classic "midlife crisis" β€” a need for authenticity.

♆ Neptune Transits

Dissolution of boundaries, spiritual openings, but also confusion and disillusionment. Neptune transits blur what seemed certain; they require faith over facts.

♇ Pluto Transits

Death and rebirth cycles. Total transformation of whatever Pluto touches. These are not subtle β€” expect the old to be destroyed so the new can emerge.

Correlating Transits with Life Events

Astrology becomes practical when you track transits against your actual life. Major events β€” career changes, relationships, moves, crises, breakthroughs β€” often correlate with significant transits.

How to Track

  1. Log significant life events with dates
  2. Look up transits active during those dates
  3. Note which natal planets/points were activated
  4. Look for patterns in the types of transits and outcomes

Our Life Events feature helps you log events and automatically calculates the transits that were active, building a personal database of how your chart responds to cosmic weather.

Key Transit Aspects to Watch

πŸ“Aspect Geometry

Angles live on the rim. Lines are visual aids.

Orb:6Β°

B: none

Arc = true angle. The rim arc shows the actual angular separation. Lines drawn through the center are chordsβ€”visual aids, not the measured angle.

(0Β°)

New beginnings. The transit planet merges with your natal energy. Strongest impact.

(90Β°)

Tension and challenge. Forced action. Growth through friction.

(180Β°)

Awareness through contrast. Relationship dynamics. Balancing polarities.

(120Β°)

Flow and ease. Opportunities that feel natural. Can be missed if not acted upon.

Pro tip: Returns (planet returning to natal position) and hard aspects to angles (ASC, MC) tend to be the most noticeable in daily life.

Transits in Vedic Astrology

Vedic astrology uses transits (called Gochara) but places even more emphasis on planetary periods called Dashas.

Vimshottari Dasha

A 120-year cycle divided among the planets. Your current Mahadasha (major period) and Antardasha (sub-period) color all experiences.

Transits + Dashas

Vedic astrologers read transits through the current dasha lord. A Saturn transit during Saturn dasha hits harder than during Jupiter dasha.

This layered approach β€” dashas as the backdrop, transits as triggers β€” gives Vedic astrology its reputation for precise timing predictions.

Practical Transit Tips

  • βœ“Focus on slow planets. Moon transits happen constantly; Pluto transits are once-in-a-lifetime. Prioritize accordingly.
  • βœ“Watch the angles. Transits to ASC, MC, IC, and DC are often most noticeable in external life circumstances.
  • βœ“Note retrogrades. When a transiting planet retrogrades, it may pass over the same point 3 times, extending the transit's influence.
  • βœ“Track patterns over time. The more data you collect about your own life and transits, the more you'll understand your chart's rhythms.
